The Prime Minister of Japan Yoshihide Suga congratulated the World Karate Federation on the 50th anniversary of the foundation of Karate’s international governing body. Mr Suga praised the sport of Karate and expressed enthusiasm ahead of the Olympic debut of the discipline in a video message sent to the WKF.
“We have the determination to hold the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 as a symbol of human resilience to overcome COVID-19. This must be a unique opportunity to spread the values and traditions of Japanese martial arts to the world,” said Mr Suga.
Japan’s Prime Minister is a 3rd- dan black belt in Karate. In his video message, he stated the impact of Karate in his life.
“I myself trained my mind and body in Karate during my time at the university and this discipline has been a big support in my life over the years. As a deep lover of Karate, I look forward to witnessing the historic moments of Tokyo 2020 with all of you”, added Mr Suga.
The World Karate Federation was founded on October 1970. The sport is set to make its Olympic debut at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 next year.
